In a press statement to mark its 50th anniversary, the RSS said that its achievements "have transcended national borders” as it has gained an Arab, regional and international reputation due to the "rich scientific and research centres and competent staff and experiences that it has accumulated over 50 years since its founding".
The RSS is a "unique national scientific edifice and research treasure in the Kingdom" that has today become a multi-disciplinary scientific institution working on support, development and advancement of Jordan to the ranks of developed countries, the statement said. The society continues to provide its services during the current situation in the Kingdom regarding the coronavirus pandemic, the Jordan News Agency, Petra, reported.
Since the start of the crisis, the RSS formed an emergency team to ensure business continuity and the provision of vital services, food, drug and medical gas analysis, maintenance of medical devices for government hospitals and water and air quality monitoring programmes to ensure public health. It has also prepared its own laboratory to test COVID-19 samples as requested, the statement noted.
The statement listed the RSS' achievements since its establishment in 1970 by a Royal Decree, noting that HRH Princess Sumaya has been endeavouring to enhance its scientific and technological achievements locally, regionally and internationally since she became the president of the society in 2006.
