Court upholds attempted murder sentences of trio
Nayrouz News Agency : The Cassation Court has upheld an October 2019 Criminal Court ruling sentencing three men to prison terms ranging from 13 to 21 years in prison after convicting them of attempting to murder a man in October 2018.

The Criminal Court declared the defendants guilty of attempting to murder a man on October 8, over an old feud and handed the main defendant a 21-year prison term and the remaining two defendants received 13 years and eight months each.

Court papers said that a few months before the incident the main defendant engaged in a heated argument with the victim over a legal dispute and decided to take revenge.

The defendant informed the two other defendants "about his plans and they agreed to help”, according to court documents.

"The defendants rented a vehicle and headed to the victim’s home," court documents said.

The main defendant "drew a pistol and fired towards the victim who was leaving the house”, the court added.

"The victim hid behind a pickup truck but was struck by two bullets in the face and arm,” court papers said.

The victim was rushed to a nearby hospital and survived after undergoing several surgeries, the court papers added.

The Criminal Court’s attorney general asked the higher court to uphold the court rulings against the three defendants.

The higher court ruled that the Criminal Court proceedings were accurate and that the defendants were given the appropriate punishment.

The Cassation Court bench comprised judges Mohammad Ibrahim, Bassim Mubeidin, Hammad Ghzawi, Saeed Mugheid and Naji Zu’bi.
