The Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) and Korea Electric Power Corporation Group (KEPCO Group) on Thursday signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to establish cooperation between KOICA and KEPCO Group in Jordan to facilitate collaborative activities that are mutually beneficial in support of communities in Jordan.
KOICA, as a governmental agency that implements Official Development Assistance (ODA) programmes on behalf of the Korean government, and that contributed to the socio-economic development of Jordan with more than $83 million through various development programmes since 2005, "has seized this opportunity to prove that collaboration between public and private sectors can contribute to creating core values for each institution, especially that both are doing their businesses in Jordan”, a KOICA statement said.
KOICA and KEPCO Group plan to focus on supporting young people and vulnerable groups, including refugees.
Through this agreement, a total of six Jordanian subsidiaries of KEPCO Group in Jordan and the KOICA Jordan Office will jointly lead in implementing the Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) programmes of the KEPCO Group and KOICA’s ODA programmes in Jordan.
KEPCO is the leading energy group that supplies and generates electricity in the world and currently has six power generation subsidiaries, including Korea Southern Power, and KEPCO KPS, which are specialised in maintaining power generation facilities, according to the statement.
In Jordan, the KEPCO Group covers about 20 per cent of Jordan's total power generation capacity. Starting with Qatrana Electric Power Company (373MW) in 2011, Amman Asia Electric Power Company (573MW), which holds Guinness World Record of the world’s largest diesel engine power plant as verified on October 23, 2014, Fujeij Wind Power Company (89.1MW), which is now being operated, and the Daehan Wind Power Plant (51.75MW), which will start operations this May.
The MoU reaffirms the efforts and commitments of the Republic of Korea to support high-quality and sustainable development outcomes in Jordan and both parties assure that this partnership will strengthen and advance the interests of each organisation’s goals for enhancing the quality of life of Jordanian people, the statement said.
