The Foreign Ministry on Sunday condemned the escalation by the Israeli authorities at Al Aqsa Mosque/Al Haram Al Sharif, attacking employees of the Jordan-run Jerusalem and Al Aqsa Mosque Affairs Department and worshippers, and allowing entry of a large number of extremists under the protection of Israeli forces.
Ministry Spokesperson Deifallah Fayez said that what Israeli forces do at Al Aqsa Mosque represents "a dangerous escalation, provocative actions, and flagrant violations” that defy all international efforts and endeavours that resulted in reaching a ceasefire in Jerusalem and other Palestinian territories.
Fayez warned Israeli authorities of the consequences of continuing violations, stressing that Israel must commit to its responsibilities under international law as an occupying power in East Jerusalem, according to a ministry statement.
He urged Israeli authorities to stop their violations and attacks at Al Aqsa Mosque and respect its sanctity, the legal and historical status quo and the authority of the Jerusalem and Aqsa Mosque Affairs Department, which is the sole body authorised to administrate the affairs of Al Haram Al Sharif.
The spokesperson called on the international community to bear its responsibility to make Israel commit to stopping its violations and attacks against Jerusalem, holy sites, and the rest of the Palestinian territories, the statement added.
