Chairman of the Royal Committee to Modernise the Political System Samir Rifai on Sunday stressed the importance of the sub-committees’ discussions to reach a consensus on the tasks entrusted to the Royal committee, the Jordan News Agency, Petra, reported. 

During a meeting held by committee, Rifai noted that that these serious discussions reflect a keenness to materialise the contents of the Royal message and uphold Jordanians’ right to enhance their democratic participation and empower youth and women. 

Such discussions help enrich the public debate on the issues raised, which have had a direct impact on the Kingdom’s progress, he said. The committee is governed by a Royal message with clear objectives and any recommendations beyond the scope of the entrusted mission will be also included in proposals, Rifai said. 

The meeting aims to consult, coordinate efforts, update members of other committees’ achievements, and submit proposals related to the work of six committees: Election, political parties, constitutional amendments related to the election, party laws, youth empowerment, and women’s empowerment.

The most significant recommendation the meeting reviewed was to create a legislative framework that establishes an effective party life capable of persuading voters.

Committees also discussed increasing the rate of youth participation in the Lower House, motivating youth to join parties, lowering the age of voting, and overturning the law that obliges public sector employees to resign if running for elections.

The discussions were focused on two main points, Petra reported. The first point involved the laws of elections, parties and the local administration.

The second point revolved around building an environment that incubates political participation, especially from youth and women, removes challenges and obstacles to political participation, achieves a decentralised local administration and sets up legal frameworks that contribute to empowering provincial councils.

The meetings of the subcommittees will continue, at a rate of three sessions per week. The subcommittee will hold consultations with different social groups to become familiar with the ideas and suggestions presented through the committee’s website: "tahdeeth.jo”.
