A delegation from the Eastern Mediterranean Public Health Network (EMPHNET), including the Director of the Center of Excellence for Applied Epidemiology (CEAE), Dr. Yousef Khader, and Medical Epidemiologist at EMPHNET, Dr. Mohammad Abu Khudair, met with Yemen’s Minister of Public Health and Population (MoPHP), His Excellency Dr. Qassem Mohammed Buhaibeh.
The meeting, attended by Undersecretary of the Ministry of Health for the Primary Health Care Sector, Dr. Ali Al-Walidi; Undersecretary for Planning, Dr. Ahmed Al-Kamal; Head of the Ministry’s Technical Office, Dr. Musleh Al-Tawaali; and Dean of the Dr. Ameen Nasher Higher Institute of Health Sciences, Dr. Jamal Amzayeb, reviewed the existing collaboration between EMPHNET and Yemen’s MoPHP and explored ways to strengthen it across priority health programs. Discussions focused particularly on epidemics, disease surveillance, training and capacity building of health professionals, and institutional and technical development.
The meeting also addressed EMPHNET’s office in Aden, which will serve to enhance coordination, accelerate the implementation of field health programs and projects, and expand the technical and scientific support provided by the network to Yemen.
In addition, the meeting touched upon several health-related issues, including the development of public health programs, strengthening the One Health approach, expanding training in applied epidemiology, and supporting joint scientific and research initiatives.
Commenting on the visit, Dr. Khader said: "At EMPHNET, we reaffirm the importance of our partnership with the Ministry of Health in Yemen. We are proud of the achievements realized over the past fifteen years through collaboration with Yemeni health institutions and remain committed to continuing this path, expanding our impact in building the capacity of Yemen’s health workforce, strengthening its health system, and contributing to the advancement of health security.”
From his end, His Excellency Dr. Buhaibeh noted that the coming period will witness broader prospects for joint cooperation between both sides, reaffirming the Ministry’s readiness to provide all that is necessary to sustain and further develop this relationship, in service of the national health sector and its growing needs.
Since 2009, EMPHNET has built a strong and enduring partnership with Yemen’s Ministry of Public Health and Population. EMPHNET has supported the establishment of the country's Field Epidemiology Training Program and subsequently extended supporting to maintaining immunization and empowering community response during the ongoing emergency, while also supporting other efforts contributing to health security through technical assistance and other capacity building efforts.
