Jayousi receives ICFJ fellowship to set up media incubator

Rawan Jayousi, a community media journalist and a human rights activist, has been awarded a one-year fellowship by the International Centre for Journalists (ICFJ) in Washington. 

She will set up through Community Media Network (CMN)  an independent journalistic incubator. Jayousi was to implement the administrative and legal basis for the incubator, which will provide free space and mechanisms to support independent journalists working with technology on June 1, according to a statement made available to The Jordan Times.

Jayousi expressed her happiness at winning the fellowship, which she hopes will provide for journalists to get an opportunity to support their projects and increase their journalistic skills while benefiting independent media.

Maggie Farley, director of ICFJ Knight Fellowships at the International Centre for Journalists, expressed delight with the new fellowship. "We are delighted to support Rawan in the creation of an incubator for media start-ups. We have great respect for her as a journalist, and are sure that with her vision, leadership, and energy, the incubator will help foster journalistic innovation that will well serve communities.”

Daoud Kuttab the director general of Community Media, expressed pride in Jayousi’s accomplishments and said that cooperating with the ICFJ will provide new opportunities for journalists. 

"We are confident that this independent media incubator will provide unique and practical service to media in Jordan and beyond and will provide tangible development to journalistic work within the challenges that all independent journalists are facing these day’s.”

Jayousi currently hosts the morning talk show "Talet Subuh” at Radio El Balad and she is a PhD candidate studying Political Science. 

The ICFJ is a not for profit Washington -based organisation that aims at supporting journalists around the world and providing them with tools to develop their skills, according to the statement.

Community Media Network is an Amman-based not-for-profit that was established in 2007 to serve local communities through media training, community media management. The CMN runs Radio Al Balad and Ammannet.net website, the statement said.
