As part of the Image Festival Amman, the Embassy of Mexico opened on Wednesday evening the exhibition Life Goes On by renowned Mexican photographer Yolanda Andrade. Held at NOFA Creative Space, the opening brought together representatives from the cultural, academic, and artistic sectors, members of the diplomatic corps, and numerous visual arts and photography enthusiasts.
During the event, Jacob Prado, Ambassador of Mexico, underscored the role of cultural diplomacy in creating meaningful opportunities for dialogue and cooperation, and explained that the exhibition is a reflection of the Embassy’s commitment to strengthening cultural ties between Mexico and Jordan and fostering mutual understanding through artistic exchange.
Organized in collaboration with Darat Al Tasweer and Almanaque Fotográfica of Mexico, Ambassador Prado noted that the exhibition forms part of these ongoing efforts, offering Jordanian audiences the opportunity to engage with contemporary Mexican photography and explore the richness and diversity of Mexico’s cultural landscape.
Yolanda Andrade belongs to a generation of artists who transformed Mexican photography from the 1970s onward, shifting attention from major historical events to the everyday experiences, urban spaces, and ordinary people that shape collective memory and identity.
In Life Goes On, she presents a compelling visual journey through scenes of daily life, human relationships, and cultural symbols. Through a poetic visual language, her work reveals a quiet intensity, where observation and composition transform the familiar into layered narratives.
Andrade, who attended the opening and is participating in the Image Festival, explained that the photographs reflect her long-standing interest in everyday realities and in the overlooked details of daily experience. She expressed her hope that visitors will engage with the stories embedded in the images, discovering new perspectives on Mexico while finding points of connection across cultures.
Born in 1950, Yolanda Andrade is widely regarded as one of the most influential photographers in Mexico and Latin America. She began her career in 1976 with black-and-white street photography documenting daily life and popular culture in Mexico City. In 2003, she transitioned to digital color photography, expanding her exploration of visual composition and cultural iconography. Her work has since taken her to Europe, India, and other regions of the world.
Her distinguished career has earned numerous awards and recognitions, most recently the Medal of Fine Arts, one of Mexico’s highest cultural honors, awarded by the National Institute of Fine Arts and Literature for a lifetime of outstanding contributions to the country’s artistic and cultural heritage.
The exhibition Life Goes On will remain open to the public at NOFA Creative Space throughout June.
