Director-General of the World Health Organization (WHO), Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, on Monday confirmed that the Al-Shifa Medical Hospital, a vital healthcare facility in Gaza, is no longer operational.
Addressing the situation on X platform, Ghebreyesus highlighted WHO's efforts to remain in contact with the medical staff at the Al-Shifa Hospital in Gaza. His words reflected the severity of the circumstances, stating, "The situation is dire and critical."
His concerns extended beyond the cessation of hospital operations, drawing attention to the alarming reality of hospitals, intended as safe sanctuaries, being transformed into distressing scenes of devastation, death, and hopelessness.
Ghebreyesus highlighted the impact of a three-day period without essential utilities, such as electricity and water, compounded by severely limited internet connectivity, which has critically impaired the hospital's ability to provide fundamental care.
He also expressed deep regret over the sharp rise in patient deaths, exacerbated by continuous gunfire and explosions in the region, intensifying already precarious conditions.
The urgency of the situation was underscored by Ghebreyesus, who unequivocally emphasized the imperative need for "a ceasefire immediately."
