Eye on Jerusalem discusses the decision to postpone the opening of the US Consulate
Nayrouz News Agency : The Eye on Jerusalem program, shown on Jordanian television on Monday, discussed the decision to postpone the opening of the US Consulate in East Jerusalem, which was closed under former US President Donald Trump in 2019.
The program's weekly report from Jerusalem indicated that the new US administration's decision to reopen the consulate was met with fierce resistance from the Israeli side, as it contradicts the previous US administration's recognition of Jerusalem as the capital of Israel.
Osama al-Saadi, a member of the Israeli Knesset for the Joint List, said that Yair Lapid and Naftali Bennett oppose the reopening of the US consulate in East Jerusalem, and that the US administration should take a decisive position on this issue, calling for the consulate to be opened as soon as possible.
The report indicated that the postponement decision constituted "disappointment" among the Palestinians, who had hoped to correct the course and policy of the previous US administration towards the Palestinian issue and Jerusalem, which prompted them to send a letter of protest to US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken and the majority leader in the US Congress.
The Palestinians expressed their deep concern over the US delay in reopening the US consulate in East Jerusalem, "which is the future capital of Palestine, according to the Oslo Accords, according to which it was agreed that it would be the site of the European, American and other embassies." According to what was reported by one of the organizers of the letter of protest to the US Secretary of State, Imad Mona. The report indicated that Israeli Foreign Minister Yair Lapid had stated his intention to accept the opening of the consulate in the West Bank and not in East Jerusalem, while the Palestinian response came by not accepting except that the consulate be in Jerusalem as the "future capital of the Palestinian state."
The program presented by colleague Jarir Maraqa met, via a video call from Ramallah, with the head of the Al-Quds Center for Future Studies in the Al-Quds Society, Dr. Ahmed Rafiq Awad, who explained that the American interest in the city of Jerusalem began before it became a superpower, as the consulate was opened in Jerusalem in 1844 included in the "Religious and Commercial Fever toward the Region" in order to search for a new history.
Regarding the services that the US Consulate in Jerusalem can provide, Rafiq said: "Its services are very many, in addition to visas, follow-up of identification papers and others, in addition to its role in the fields of education, agriculture and communication with Palestinian civil society,” adding that the presence of the embassy is important because it It is an acknowledgment that it is an occupied city.
Dr. Rafiq stressed that complying with the proposal to open the consulate in Ramallah is a confirmation of the idea of autonomy and the killing of the idea of a Palestinian state, and a perpetuation of the idea of "reducing the conflict” that Bennett holds, which means that the Palestinian can live without a state and political rights in exchange for money or an economic package.
He referred to the speech of the throne in which His Majesty King Abdullah opened the works of the regular session of the National Assembly and his position on the Palestinian cause and Jerusalem, stressing that the Palestinian people and the authority value them, and that everyone is fully aware of the pressures, difficulties and threats that Jordan has been exposed to because of its position towards the so-called The "Deal of the Century". He said that the Hashemite custodianship of Islamic and Christian holy sites in Jerusalem is "a critical historical, religious and ideological commitment that we need at this time."
