Dr. Mohannad Al Nsour, Executive Director of the Eastern Mediterranean Public Health Network (EMPHNET), has taken on a vital role in global health security as the newly elected Chair of the Global Outbreak Alert and Response Network (GOARN) Steering Committee. His election comes after two years of service as Deputy Chair, during which he reinforced its mission to protect lives during crises.
GOARN is a vast network of over 300 institutions, coordinated by the World Health Organization (WHO), that stands on the front lines of public health emergencies. From outbreaks of infectious diseases to natural disasters, GOARN mobilizes expertise, resources, and personnel, deploying them to regions in need with a singular focus: containing threats and saving lives. This network of technical organizations is mobilized during urgent public health events to deploy resources, expertise, and personnel to affected regions.
Dr. Al Nsour brings decades of experience in public health and emergency response to this role. From public health systems strengthening to outbreak preparedness, he has spearheaded initiatives that address the core vulnerabilities in global health. His expertise is shaped not only by academic and organizational leadership but also by fieldwork – particularly in the Eastern Mediterranean region, where complex crises demand rapid, adaptive solutions.
As Chair, Dr. Al Nsour will guide the network’s strategic direction and operational effectiveness ensuring that GOARN remains agile and adaptable to evolving global health threats. He envisions a network that amplifies the voices of all regional partners and aligns closely with the needs of the communities on the ground. His is a vision grounded in collaboration and a deep understanding of the stakes involved in public health emergencies.
Dr. Al Nsour assumes this role alongside the newly elected co-deputy chairs Daniela Garone from Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) and Dr. Edmund Newman from UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA). Together, and through their collective expertise this leadership team will guide GOARN in navigating the ongoing and future health challenges.
At a time when public health crises are unfolding with unprecedented complexity, GOARN’s role has never been more vital. Under Dr. Al Nsour’s stewardship, the network is set to expand its reach, deepen its impact, and remain a cornerstone of global outbreak preparedness and response.
